NIZ Festival WEDNESDAY: "Bus Stop"

WEDNESDAY AT NORTH ISLAND ZONE DRAMA FESTIVAL:

In a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. Weary travellers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in sparkling gown and seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursured, made love to, and finally kidnapped by a 21-year old cowboy with the romantic methods of a headstrong bull. The beligerent cowhand is ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to his ranch in Montana. As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver develop a friendship of their own, a middle-aged scholar comes to terms with himself, and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance.

The Nanaimo Theatre Group began in 1961 from the hopes of 3 local theatre buffs, Roger and Barbara Desprez and Geoff Rogers. It has grown and thrived over the years and NTG's original tiny building has now evolved into their present 172-seat theatre space. They maintain a membership between 150-175 each year and produce a minium of 4 productions per season including a Pantomime. They have been fortunate enough to experience many Mainstage festivals as the NIZ representative and have brought home many awards.
