Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour - Pasadena
Cerebral, clean, cross-cultural "Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour" returns to SoCal

After a successful run of sell-out shows in Atlanta, Reno, San Francisco and Hollywood, the Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour kicks off its 2011 run at The Vosloh Forum at Pasadena City College on Saturday, February 12th at 8pm.

Samson Koletkar, the world's only Indian Jewish comedian and creator of the show, says, "We are delighted by the great response we have gotten to our tour. It started out as a challenge, to bind together 3 comedians from minority groups commenting on sensitive issues of politics, race and religion in America. But our zero-profanity approach has attracted new audiences, ones that prefer to laugh at poignant point-of-views over profanity sprinkled with words. While we touch on sensitive issues our goal is not to shock or offend people it's to make them think."

Born and raised in Mumbai, Koletkar brings a refreshingly smart approach to comedy. With a Masters degree in Computer Software, he moved to San Francisco to work in IT, before making the switch to comedy. Winner of the 2010 Asian American Theater Company's Tight Ten Comedy Competition, Koletkar has entertained audiences in India, Canada and throughout the U.S. with his thought-provoking satire and witty observations. He produces and hosts Comedy off Broadway Oakland every week, and has also toured with Pundits with Punchlines, Make Chai Not War, and Funatical Comedy Tour. He has been featured on Asian Jewish Life and Indian Express, & has also appeared on HumDesi Radio (Canada) and CBS.

"I bring an outsider's perspective inside America. I wasn't born here. I am not your stereotypical Indian or Jewish comedian. I am the voice of those 1st gen immigrants who came to this country and went through a lot of hardships to raise kids that grew up to make careers out of poking fun at their expense," Koletkar said.

Joining Koletkar on the "Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour" are Dhaya Lakshminarayanan (an Indian Hindu) and Joe Nguyen (a Vietnamese Jew).

Nguyen, the most laid-back of the trio, would rather tell jokes about his personal trials and tribulations than stir up politics and religion. "I'd like to think that my act is a good balance of jokey-jokes and storytelling, which means that I am always going for what I think are clever punch lines, but I keep every joke based in truth," Nguyen said. "I'm excited about this tour because we are getting the opportunity to travel as a group and develop and promote a pretty unique brand of comedy that is both clean and clever." Born to a Vietnamese immigrant and a Caucasian Jew from the Dominican Republic, Nguyen, raised in Georgia and now based in San Francisco, is also the winner of the 2009 Russian River Comedy Competition.

Lakshminarayanan, the self-described nerd in the group, takes an intellectual approach to comedy, which is not surprising, considering the fact that she is a mathematics whiz who graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Raised by Indian parents in Alabama and Georgia, she also brings a unique Southern perspective to her act. She has toured nationally as one of "Five Funny Females," and won first place in the 2007 "Battle of the Bay" competition. "The Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour showcases that stand-up can be cerebral, informative, positive and inspiring," she said. "As the sole woman on the tour, I have the liberty to comment on gender, race, politics, science, social media and culture from my perspective, without resorting to low-brow topics that often turn off audiences."

Together, "the Indian, the Jew, and the Indian Jew" promise an evening of laughter and international introspection. The Mahatma Moses Comedy Tour will take place on Saturday, February 12 at 8pm at The Vosloh Forum at Pasadena City College, 1570 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106. Admission is $15 presale / $20 at the door. For ticket information, visit www.tour.Mahatma-Moses.com or call (805)861-1110.
