Join us for the next PPB Evening Book Club gathering as we discuss our May selection,
"The Children Act" by Ian McEwan.
Fiona Maye is a leading High Court judge in London, presiding over cases in the family court where she is renowned for her fierce intelligence, preciseness and sensitivity. Her private life is a different story, she has a lingering regret of never having children, and now, her marriage of thirty years is crumbling.
She is called on to try an urgent case: for religious reasons, a seventeen-year-old boy, Adam, is refusing medical treatment that could save his life, and his parents share his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely held faith? In the course of reaching a decision Fiona visits the boy in the hospital a meeting that has serious consequences for them both.
