DANIELLE BRAZELL General Manager, Department of Cultural Affairs
Danielle Brazell has been nominated by Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as the new general manager of the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Los Angeles. Her work with the department will begin pending confirmation by the Los Angeles City Council.
"Los Angeles is the creative capital of the world, and Danielle has the experience and passion to lead the Department into a new era that showcases our talent, inspires our youth, and supports our creative economy," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "Arts shouldn't be an afterthought. They should be a core part of our city government, and Danielle is uniquely qualified to make sure arts and culture touches every Angeleno's life."
Danielle was Arts for LA's first executive director, joining the organization in 2006 as it transitioned from an ad hoc committee of regional arts leaders to a formalized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Over the last eight years, she has steadily built Arts for LA's capacity from an informal network of arts leaders to a respected coalition of advocates working in partnership with elected officials throughout Los Angeles County. Today, Arts for LA's network includes over 160 member organizations and over 40,000 people.
Danielle's twenty years of experience include work as the director of special projects for the Screen Actors Guild Foundation and as the artistic director of Highways Performance Space. She has been honored with numerous grants and awards, including the 2000 Getty Fellowship, a 2009 CLEAR Communications Fellowship sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation, and a 2010 SHero Award from California State Senator Curren D. Price. In 2013, Danielle attended the Executive Education program for State and Local Government Leaders at Harvard University. She serves on the board of Californians for the Arts, on the Arts for All Executive Committee, and represents Arts for LA on the Policy Committee of the California Alliance for Arts Education.
Terence McFarland, Chair of Arts for LA's Board of Directors, said, "The Mayor has tapped an ideal leader to helm the Cultural Affairs department. Danielle is a fierce advocate and understands, to her core, the transformational qualities of the arts. A change agent, beloved in the arts community, she will serve us all well, in partnership with the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Los Angeles."
"Arts for LA knew we had a dynamic, visionary, and passionate leader for the arts in Danielle Brazell; we commend her appointment to head DCA and look forward to continuing Arts for LA's partnership with the City in advocating for the arts," said Debra J.T. Padilla, Incoming Arts for LA Board Chair and Executive Director of the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC).
The Department of Cultural Affairs is the City of Los Angeles's primary distributor of public funding in support of arts, culture, and arts education projects citywide. With a granting portfolio of over 350 organizations, twenty-two neighborhood arts and cultural centers, and a robust public art program, the department's mission is to advance the social and economic impact of the arts and ensure access to diverse and enriching cultural activities in neighborhoods throughout the City of Los Angeles.
Danielle thanks the Arts for LA Board of Directors, the staff, and the network of member organizations and advocates for her time with Arts for LA and looks forward to continuing to work through the arts with Los Angeles's diverse communities in this new role.
