The Heiress is set in the world of 1850s New York City high society. Socially awkward, plain Catherine Sloper cowers under her domineering father, Dr. Austin Sloper, who blames her for causing her mother's death in childbirth. When poor but handsome suitor Morris Townsend arrives, Catherine falls for him much to the chagrin of her father, who insists the caller only wants the money she will inherit.
