Women's Industry Appreciation
Please Join Kelly Kozak from Bernal Cutlery and Laurie Pellicano from Tartine Bakery for an industry appreciation event for women. We hope to cover some ground that might help with practical skills in kitchen work, tool up keep, teaching and inspiring groups about food, cooking and nutrition.
Each presenter will table a 30 minute presentation on butchery, knife skills, tools, sharpening and teaching with a 30 minute question answer. We're requesting a $5 -$10 sliding scale fee to cover some costs. Please RSVP with Laurie Ellen, or Kelly Kozak keeping in mind that folks are volunteering their time. Please show up if you claim a spot.
Samin Nosrat creates community around food as a chef, writer and teacher in the Bay Area. From Chez Panisse to Tuscany, Piemonte to the northern coast of Iran, she has spent the past fifteen years immersed in a life of cooking and learning beside groundbreaking chefs, home cooks, farmers, writers and artists. Drawing on this broad spectrum of experience, she brings to her all of her varied work a sense of humor and joy as well as a deep desire to empower and encourage people to find their own comfortable place in the kitchen. She is currently at work on her first book, to be published by Simon & Schuster in 2016.
Gracie Schatz is a butcher and a farmer. She worked at the Fatted Calf in San Francisco and then was fully trained as a whole animal butcher at Avedanos in Bernal Heights. She currently works as a cook and butcher at a small restaurant in Nevada City where she also has her own small farm and a couple of pigs whom she hopes to turn in to some very fine cured meat products. Making good meat more accessible and reeducating consumers about the necessity and delights of consuming all parts of the animal are her current goals.
Lisa Weiss is a home cook and a lead sharpener at Bernal Cutlery. Lisa was taught on a whim and became a successful sharpener with intensive practice and a lot of help from her rad, experienced, and patient senior sharpeners. When she's not sharpening knives, she spends her time photographing her derrière, finagling her stubborn grandmothers recipes, and playing surf records for her grumpy cat.
