Harlem's Future
Kicking off MAD's new series Vibrant Space, which examines environments of cultural production, Harlem's Future brings together community lead- ers, historians, developers, and artists for a town hall-style examination of the impact of the arts and culture on Harlem's past, present, and future.
No sooner did African-Americans began moving into the neighborhood in the early 20th century than Harlem became an early nexus point for the civil rights movement and African-American art and culture. In recent years, however, as the need for affordable housing for a middle-class work- force has increased, Harlem has been transformed into a "hotspot" for young working professionals, who increasingly are not black. This town hall will examine the effect of these newcomers on one of New York's most legendary and culturally fertile neighborhoods.
