Mana Hashimoto was born in Tokyo, Japan and began studying classical ballet from age four. She came to United States in 1993 to study free-jazz composition at the New England Conservatory and Berklee Academy of Music in Boston, working primarily with the piano. Mana came to New York City in 1998 to study modern dance at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Since 2001, Mana has trained and performed with master butoh artists around the world and established her own choreography on the world's stage.
Mana began losing her sight at the age of 17, and ten years ago she lost her sight completely. Nevertheless, this has not interfered with her career: the passion for her art continues and she assumes an active choreography and performance schedule, as well as teaching dance movement workshops for visually impaired people and children in New York City. Recently, in addition to dance and music, Mana has been exploring video.
