MEETING THE GHOSTS: HOLLAND AND WORLD WAR 2
While living in Amsterdam, Canvas founders Lynn Hutchinson and David Sheldon discovered from their landlords that the home in which they were living was a place of resistance activity during World War 2. With the help of the Netherlands War Documents Institute, they created a photographic exhibit and documentary about Holland during the War, the score to which is played live.
Since the debut of "Meeting the Ghosts" in Amsterdam on May 4th, 2008, a large number of sketches and scores of pieces by Dutch composers who died during the War have been discovered. Distributed on a small-scale by a publishing house in Amsterdam, the scores are slowly being made available to the public. Honored to bring this music into light, Canvas will feature music written by Leo Smit (1900-1943), Nico Richter (1915-1945) and Dick Kattenburg (1919-1943).
Program: Leo Smit (1900-1943): Suite for Piano; Nico Richter (1915-1945): Two Pieces for Violin and Piano; Dick Kattenburg (1919-1944): Quartet for Flute, Violin, Cello and Piano; Meeting the Ghosts: Holland and World War 2 - documentary with live music score, 65 mins.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the sensitive nature of this program, Canvas will not be offering an afternoon Family Show. Children are welcome to come to the evening program at their parent/guardian's discretion. There are no violent or graphic concentration camp images used in our program. But topics of war and occupation are at the center of the story.
