Performance of Dutchman by Amiri Baraka
Maplewood Performing Arts Centre and Many Voices presents
Theatrical Performance of Dutchman by Amiri Baraka.
Directed by Darryll D. Rudy.
Featuring Barbara Edelman Bangs and Reuben Josephe Tapp.
Dutchman, Amiri Baraka's shocking one-act play was first presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City in March, 1964. It won the Obie Award for best off-Broadway play. It was controversial from the beginning.
Forty six years later, its impact is still powerful and unsettling. The play forces us to examine our own prejudices and fears, as well as the broader societal context.
A seductive white woman Lula, with the provocation of her lovely, half-naked body and of her startlingly lascivious speech, lures to his doom a good-looking young black man Clay, a stranger whom she has picked up in a New York subway and whom she mocks for wearing the clothes and employing the voice and manners of the conventional white intellectual.
The man, who, at first seeing no reason to resist the woman's advances, perceives too late that he is being used by her and launches a wild and bitter
counterattack on her and on the entire white race.
A Forum on Racism will immediately follow each performance for discussion and questions between audience, community members and cast and director.
This play is intended for mature audience.
