The American Tattooed Ladies: 1840-2015
 Date: Tuesday, May 12th
Time: 8pm
Admission: $8
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn NY

Tonight, join us for a heavily illustrated talk exploring the historical legacy of the tattooed lady in America with a special focus on the freak shows and dime museums where she made her living. We will learn about Nora Hildebrandt--the first professional tattooed lady--as well as such unforgettable characters as Irene Woodward and P.T. Barnum. Irish will situate The Tattooed Lady into the checkered history of tattooing more generally, and investigate how she can be understood today.

Anni Irish's work focuses on the representation of bodies, fetishism, and the social history of tattooing in America. Irish currently holds a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University, an MA in Gender and Cultural Studies from Simmons College, and an MA in Performance Studies from New York University. Irish has been a contributing writer to several online publications including Boston based publication, The Dig, New York Arts Magazine, and Tattoo Artist Magazine among others. She has presented at numerous academic conferences and has also guest lectured. Her article "The New Tattooed Lady: A Social and Sexual Analysis" was published in the 2013 Summer edition of MP, a feminist academic journal affiliated with Rutgers University. In 2015, she will begin adjuncting at the School of Visual Arts. She is currently developing a manuscript on American female tattooing practices. Irish was born and raised in Manchester, CT and resides in Brooklyn, NY
