SMPS SFBAC Leadership Symposium - Session 1 - The MAGIC of an Engaged Team
When leaders bring their hearts and minds to their work, and in turn pass those on to those around them, they can become a powerful force in leading a successful team. Through lively interactive discussion and helpful self-assessment, the presenter will share the MAGIC ingredients that can help a leader build a high performing team.
Meaning: Your work has purpose beyond the work itself Autonomy: The power to shape your work and environment in ways that allow you to perform at your best Growth: Being stretched and challenged in ways that result in professional and personal progress Impact: Seeing positive, effective, and worthwhile outcomes and results from your work Connection: The sense of belonging to something beyond yourself
MAGIC shows how leaders can help their teams achieve higher levels of engagement, as well as how team members can be more successful by taking ownership for their own MAGIC.
Engagement is a two-way process. Employees have to choose to be engaged, but leaders have to provide conditions which encourage engagement. Most managers get promoted into management positions without appropriate leadership training, and they are usually unaware of their inability to draw the best from their teams.
Attendees will learn how to engender "discretionary effort" from their teams to accomplish important goals and initiatives. Discretionary effort means going "above and beyond" regularly, but without creating an unhealthy life/work balance. And who doesn't want that? Participants will leave with a new understanding and a concrete plan for how they can accomplish this with their team.
The concepts in the session will be adapted from the book "MAGIC: Five Keys to Unlock the Power of Employee Engagement" by Maylett and Warner, 2014.
