FIRST Robotics Program in Whatcom County
Please join us on Friday October 15 for a presentation on a unique Robotics program at Sehome High School. With support from industry, high school students are now preparing for the FIRST and VEX Robotics Competitions. A couple of the students will be present to show and talk about their demo projects at the luncheon. We are pleased to have the Program Lead, Kevin Criez of Sehome High school, and engineering mentor, Gil Lund of Lund Engineering, join us to provide you with a a vision for a world class robotics program right here in Whatcom County. As robotic sub-systems are implemented in many new areas it will be critical for young minds to have this curriculum option in the 21st century.
The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) founded and run by legendary inventor Dean Kaman, is the largest and most prestigious technical event for high school aged kids in the world. With over 1,800 teams and 45,000 participants in 12 countries the FIRST program is truly the "world series of the mind." During the preparation for this event the students learn not only how to apply basic scientific and engineering principles but also how to meet strict deadlines and how to function on a high performance, multi-disciplinary team. To be successful during the FRC event requires strong community involvement and sponsorships. With such a rich pool of technical talent to support a FRC team, Bellingham has a great potential to grow a successful robotics program and make a significant impact in the life of young minds who are evaluating career opportunities.
By offering activities to apply and refine a knowledge of science, engineering, marketing, and sportsmanship the FIRST program is an invaluable investment in our community's future success.
