ArtBridge and the Center for Architecture present: Plywood, Concrete, Paint! Re-Imagining the Contemporary Construction Site as Canvas for Public Art
There's something in the air...literally.
In the last two years, sidewalk sheds, of which there are more linear feet hanging above our heads than there are yellow cabs in New York City, have been getting a lot of attention. There's an entire section on popular real estate website Curbed NY, devoted to exposing "Scaffolding Nightmares" around town but people are doing a lot more than just sitting around complaining. The Downtown Alliance for New York, ArtBridge, the Center for Architecture and most recently, the Department of Buildings, are just a handful of the many organizations that are using construction sites and materials as platforms for Public-Art making. Art is playing an integral role in connecting the public to the space around them, even as it is in development and not yet complete.
Join us for a lively panel discussion featuring representatives from organizations and Government Agencies throughout NYC coming together to discuss what seems to be a growing movement, turning away from the construction site to turning towards it, seeing it for the first time as unexplored territory for the exhibition of Public Art.
Speakers include Joe Covello, Vice President and Co-Owner of United Hoisting and Scaffolding; Rodney Durso, Founder, ArtBridge; Olympia Kazi, Executive Director of the Van Alen Institute; and Public Artist, Maya Barkai.
Moderator: Katie Denny, The North Brooklyn Coalition for Public Art
