Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber
With an alumni that includes Melvin Van Peebles, Matana Roberts, Vijay Iyer, Julia Kent, Swiss Chris, DJ Mutamassik, Graham Haynes and Okkyung Lee ... Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, led by Village Voice icon Greg "Ironman" Tate and monster groove bassist Jared Michael Nickerson since 1999, continues to be a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious chops cover a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-avant rock & hip hop spectrum. The live version of the group can feature as many as 22 players at any one time.
The current crew revolves around Vernon Reid ( guitar & conduction) singers Lisala, Karma Mayet Johnson, Luqman Brown, Shelley Nicole, Jeremiah, Latasha Nevada N. Diggs, Mikel Banks (vocals, freak-a-phone & conduction), Mazz Swift (violin & vocals), André Lassalle, Ben Tyree, Asim Barnes (guitar), Lewis "Flip" Barnes (trumpet), Michael Veal (soprano sax), Micah Gaugh (alto sax), V. Jeffery Smith & Avram Fefer (tenor sax), "Moist" Paula Henderson (baritone sax), Dave "Smoota" Smith and Mark Williams (trombone), Bruce Mack (synthesizer), Leon Gruenbaum (piano), Jason DiMatteo (acoustic bass), Shawn Banks (conga & percussion) LaFrae Sci, Trevor Holder, Chris Eddleton and Qasim Naqvi (drums) as well as occasional "special guests" like Maya Azucena, Vinia Mojica, Abby Dobson (vocals), noted installation artist Satch Hoyt (flute & percussion) who's living in Berlin and Marque Gilmore (drums & electronics) who's living in Oslo-- Oh yes the Arkestra Chamber is global like that! As Greg Tate likes to say "BURNT SUGAR the ARKESTRA CHAMBER . never smooth jass .. just hella bumpy!"
