Equus
Equus is arguably one of the most well respected and critically acclaimed
contemporary plays. Every year hundreds of productions appear worldwide.
The play was written over thirty years ago in Britain. The script is reflective of the
time and locale.
Ludicrous Theatre Company is attempting to take a fresh new look at this amazing
work. Artistic Director Wayne Shaw is setting the show in the United States, in
Nevada, just outside of Reno. In addition, the show becomes vital and
contemporary, the action is happening now, in 2010.
A typical production involves a psychiatrist who is "middle aged" typically played
by a 50 something, full figured man, usually bearded, gray hair. Alan, the patient,
is 17, thin, and has a physical innocence and naiveté.
Ludicrous once again is throwing the "normal" strictures aside. The psychiatrist is
a much younger man, late thirties to forties, attractive and a guy next door. He is
much less formal and approachable. Alan becomes a slightly older young man,
early 20s, whose isolation in a rural area of America leaves him unsophisticated
and innocent.
The show will bring to the forefront the blending of the human drives of
spirituality and sexuality. In addition, the homosexual subtext is brought front and
center, with the relationship between the horse nugget and Alan both intimate and
sensual.
