September 18th - October 3rd, 2010
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM & Sundays at 1:30 PM
Al Lewis and Willie Clark were a very successful comedy team from the golden years of vaudeville 43 years of hilarious sketches and double entendres. No wonder they were called "The Sunshine Boys." Twelve years ago, an argument ended it all. Now a producer wants them to recreate one of their classic scenes for a TV special. It falls to Ben, Willie's nephew and hardworking agent, to convince the cantankerous duo to forget their feud in time for the big show. "The Sunshine Boys" is one of Neil Simon's finest!
SLEEPWALK
By William Mastrosimone
Directed by Jerry Miller
November 6th - 21st, 2010
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM & Sundays at 1:30 PM
A young man, Dillon, flirts with thoughts of suicide. He enters a dream world, populated by personifications of the emotional turmoils which he and other teens experience. Emmy-winning playwright William Mastrosimone (who also wrote "Bang, Bang, You're Dead"), created this drama with input from mental health professionals to foster an open dialogue about depression and suicide, and remove the stigmas associated with seeking professional help. "Sleepwalk" is a drama meant to be performed for teens, by teens. It asks tough, timely questions. Creatively blending humor, pathos and imagination, the story follows Dillon on his inner journey, as he learns to not respond to impulse and take time to reason.
I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE
Book & Lyrics by Joe DiPietro
Music by Jimmy Roberts
Directed by Dale Hawes
February 19th - March 6th, 2011
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM & Sundays at 1:30 PM
Described by the Star Ledger as "Seinfeld set to music," "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" celebrates the mating game and tackles the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum, "the relationship." Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pickup techniques of the geriatric set. This buoyant revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their faces at the portal of romance, and to those who have dared to ask, "Say, what are you doing Saturday night?"
THE RAINMAKER
By N. Richard Nash
Directed by Floyd A. May
April 30th - May 15th, 2011
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM & Sundays at 1:30 PM
This classic romance is set in America's heartland, when a huckster could still make a living selling snake oil and other dubious "miracle" cures. The charismatic Starbuck arrives at the droughtstricken Curry farm, promising to make it rain for a price, of course. When he and the family's lone daughter, Lizzie, discover a genuine chemistry, they begin to consider the possibility of a real miracle. N. Richard Nash's play, a 1954 hit on Broadway, became a noted 1956 film, starring Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn.
PARISH PLAY
Written & Directed by Sue Mrotek
June 17th - 25th, 2011
Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays & Sundays at 1:30 PM
Area playwright, Sue Mrotek, returns to The James Downing Theatre with a new original comedy. Members of a cash-strapped congregation's Finance Committee use politics and passion to resolve issues for their aging church and its debts. With or without divine intervention, the members agree to organize their seemingly limitless parish talent pool and stage a fundraising show. The pool soon seems more like a puddle, as they grapple with scheduling, bake sales, Bingo games, the trials and tribulations of tech and other production stumbling blocks. It's their love for life and their parish that makes the show so fun and endearing.
