AIA|LA Tours: The Studio of Ehrlich Architects
The Studio of Ehrlich Architects

Ehrlich Architects has recently been honored with the 2015 AIA Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor bestowed on an architecture firm. While the diverse portfolio and design process of Ehrlich Architects certainly warrants attention, it is the firm's culture and diversity that result in a unique cultural sensitivity and a commitment to creating architecture that is globally relevant. Ehrlich Architects' studio in Culver City is home to that diversity; a formerly derelict structure with a colorful history resurrected nearly twenty years ago as an open-plan atelier.

Originally built in 1917 as a dance hall and community center, the Culver City Municipal Club House later found a second life as a mortuary.  When Steven Ehrlich purchased the property for the firm's offices it had been boarded up for years, a virtual untouchable stigmatized by its past. Luckily, the original structure's large auditorium was only superficially divided into smaller spaces with hung ceilings. The building's long-span wood truss roof system was intact and the original maple floor remained, just buried beneath shag carpet.

The structure was stripped down to its essential shell and a shoestring core and shell budget allowed the firm to re-imagine the space as an active center for engagement and creativity. A 90-year-old rubber tree is the focal point of an outdoor courtyard accessed via a glass roll-up garage door. The courtyard serves as an al fresco dining room, overflow conference space, and even as a presentation and party venue.
