IKEBANA WORKSHOP with Mariko Nishi at Brooklyn Workshop Gallery
A WAY WITH FLOWERS AND NATURE
AN EXHIBITION TRUNK SHOW and SPECIAL IKEBANA WORKSHOP
On June 19th and 20th Ayaka Nishi, jeweler, and Mariko Nishi, Ikebana artist and teacher, will exhibit their work at a special event at Brooklyn Workshop Gallery in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
Mariko Nishi, an acknowledged artist from the School of Sensho-Ikenobo works in both modern and traditional arranging forms. Ikebana is a style originally inherited from early forms of Buddhist altar offerings circa 500 A.D., and continues to be developed to the present day by artists devoted to perfecting the joining of living forms (flowers) with sculptural principles. Mariko is known in Japan not only for her exquisite work but also for her teaching. During this special event she offers a workshop alongside her exhibit to the NYC community.
Ayaka Nishi grew up in the magical world of her mother's art. She too is fully versed in the details of nature and the principles of space. Additionally, Ms. Nishi was exposed to scientific information about anatomy through her surgeon father and grandfather's medical libraries. Her knowledge and admiration of anatomical form is deep. Her not only flowers, but also bones, spider webs, fish scales, honeycombs and wings inspire Ayaka's meticulous work. Following upon the netsuke traditions for which Japan is famous, Ayaka is a superb crafts artist in her precise and elegant forms. No detail is too small for her attention. Her work is made of materials from sterling to copper and incorporates pearls and other stones. Ayaka shows extraordinary promise in her work both as a purist and as a member of the Contemporary Japanese Art Movement so influenced by urban street fashion and the Goth movement. Her already popular Spine Bracelet will be available for public viewing and order.
Ayaka's work has been featured in many magazines throughout Japan and the United States. Her spine bracelet and spider ring and coral necklace and spider earring pieces will be highlighted in the August edition of Elle 2010. Brooklyn Workshop Gallery is a new gallery with an emphasis on artists whose work connects deeply with nature and the body. Workshop Gallery Artists Foundation, Inc. is an affiliated non-profit dedicated to keeping traditional craft alive and vibrant in our world and encouraging the interpretation and expression of such through the individual artisan.
The show opens Saturday at noon and continues through the weekend.
The flower workshop is Sunday, June 20th from 1-3:30 in the afternoon.
