Slow Food Eugene Ethiopian Potluck!
Beans and grain, Willamette Valley grass seed farmers, and an Ethiopian potluck?  If you're confused, you'll just have to read on.

One of the most compelling changes in Western Oregon agriculture is going on right under our noses.  Farmers who for years have been growing grass seed for export around the world are planting hard red wheat, beans, lentils, and many other food crops.  If these crops are commercially viable, we'll see them all up and down the Valley.

This is your opportunity to see first hand how Willamette Valley agriculture is changing.  Read more about the project on the Willamette Farm And Food Coalition web site.

Tom, Jason, and Sue Hunton have invited Slow Food Eugene to an evening potluck at their lovely farm.  Making this particularly special is that we will be enjoying Ethiopian food for our potluck dinner.

What's the connection?  Here goes--One of the crops that the Hunton's have planted is a grain called teff.  Although there are many crops in the Hunton's fields, only teff from last year's harvest is available.  So, Slow Food Eugeners are going to use what's available.  For those unfamiliar with teff, it is a grain native to Ethiopia, where it is used to make injera bread.

Erin Walkenshaw will be organizing an injera bread making event in preparation for the dinner.  If you want to help, send Erin an email.  For those bringing food to the potluck, your job will be to look up Ethiopian food on the internet and bring something to pass.  There's lots of room for creativity, so bring your favorite wat, tibs, kitfo, or even firfir.

Here are the details:

WHO:  Tickets limited to members and their families, until June 24

DATE:  Thursday, July 1, 2010

TIME:  6 pm to 8 pm

PLACE:  Hunton Farm - 28390 Milliron Road, Junction City, OR 97448

COST:  $12 per person, children under 12 free

WHAT TO BRING:  An Ethiopian dish to share.  Your own cups, plates, and table settings.  Ethiopian food is typically eaten by dipping injera bread into the communal pot and grabbing a morsel.  The Oregon Health Department would prefer serving spoons, knives, forks, and spoons.  Slow Food Eugene will provide the injera bread and a non-alcoholic beverage.

Because of our concern for inclement weather, attendance is limited to the first 30 members and member families.  If Oregon summer ever arrives, we will be able to accommodate more people.  We'll let you know by email on June 24th, if more tickets are available at Brown Paper Ticket.
