M2: Mayakovsky and Marinetti
Theatre Novi Most offers a look back to a time when a rebellious few saw, in the automobile and modern warfare, the pinnacles of human creation and ingenuity.
M 2 begins when the life of Russian poet and playwright Vladimir Mayakovsky ends: his suicide in 1930. From there, a non-linear narrative flashbacks through his relationships with Lili Brik, his lifelong lover, and with Filippo Marinetti, author of the Futurist Manifesto: A paean to the mechanized, automatized and masculinized future he envisioned for the world. As the movement grows wildly extreme (and ridiculous) and Russia slowly concedes to Soviet tyranny, Mayakovsky discovers his passion to live the Futurist standard cannot overcome certain human and political realities. M 2: Mayakovsky & Marinetti is an original script, based on actual historical writings by Mayakovsky and Marinetti, and features live music and multimedia. By turns funny, absurd, tragic and romantic, this performance takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of re-imagined history .
Theatre Novi Most ("Theatre of the New Bridge" in Russian) was founded in 1998 by Russian director Vladimir Rovinsky and American director Lisa Channer, combining theatre techniques and physical performance methods from both countries. Novi Most regularly calls upon an eclectic team of associate artists from across both Russia and America, allowing unknown or misunderstood work to be appreciated by a wide range of audiences. Original productions typically use multiple languages alongside distinct physical expression, transcending language and cultural difference. Novi Most is a member of the Network of Ensemble Theatres.
