Kita y Fernanda, a play by Tanya Saracho
Kita y Fernanda offers a look at class, immigration and women's friendships as it follows the lives of two girls growing up in the Valderrama household. Fernanda is the privileged daughter of a rich Mexican family living in Texas; Kita is the child of an undocumented maid who has been smuggled across the border in order to provide Mrs. Valderrama with a servant "who won't look her straight in the eye."
Together they navigate "El Otro Lado," growing together and growing apart in a world of English, "Barbis," and different expectations. Of an early preview of Kita y Fernanda, Margo Jefferson of the The New York Times said, "Politics, class differences, education... How does one give them a human face onstage, we're always asking? They can tell us as much as love stories or family stories. In fact, they're all bound up together. Two girls grow up in the same household until one realizes that being the daughter of the maid has meant she's had to give more and expect less. The other is heartbroken-her privilege has protected her from this knowledge. That's a love story."
