Loud and Unladylike
Loud and Unladylike is a staged reading festival featuring new plays by local playwrights Rachel Bublitz, Claire Rice, and Tracy Held Potter about historically significant, but lesser known women. These are women who have transcended the stereotype of what it means to be a 'lady'. There will be two staged readings of each play with re-writes in between.

"A is for Adeline" inspired by the life of Adeline Dutton Train Whitney, written by Tracy Held Potter, directed by Rebecca Ennals (June 25th and July 9th)
"The Effects of Ultraviolet Light" inspired by the life of Roger Arliner Young, written by Claire Ann Rice, directed by Ellery Schaar (June 26th and July 11th)
"Code Name: Brass Rose" inspired by the life of Nancy Wake, written by Rachel Bublitz, directed by Melinda Marks (June 27th and July 10th)

They are real people, women who have left their mark on history, through their contributions to the arts, sciences, politics, war, civil rights, and beyond. Their stories are not intended as museum pieces or propaganda, but as explorations of heartbreak and celebration, determination and failure, redemption and sacrifice. These women were not perfect, but were human beings with flaws, struggles, and strengths that deserve to be better known, and stories that deserve to be heard.

Loud and Unladylike was founded by Rachel Bublitz, Tracy Held Potter, and Claire Rice.  Each year it will feature new plays by women playwrights, starting in 2015 with three plays by the founders.

Rachel's play will focus on New Zealand-born Nancy Wake, who was a British agent during WWII, a courier for the French Resistance, and a member of the Baker Street Irregulars - a British espionage and sabotage organization during the war.

Tracy's play will focus on Adeline Dutton Train Whitney, who was an American poet and writer of books for girls which espoused a traditional view of gender roles.

Claire's play will focus on Roger Arliner Young, who broke many barriers as the first African American woman to earn a doctoral degree in zoology. Young spent years caring for her invalid mother, while struggling to balance her own scientific career at the same time.

Rachel Bublitz is an internationally produced playwright. She founded the 31 Plays in 31 Days Project, is a Youth Ambassador for the Dramatists Guild of America, and has been a member of the PlayGround Writers' Pool since 2013.
