Old is the New Green: Historic Buildings with an Eco Edge
The Seattle Architecture Foundation is sponsoring three tours showcasing different approaches to historic preservation and green redevelopment.  The designers, developers and visionaries responsible for the transformations of structures, ranging from a house of worship to a department store, will walk you through their projects and explain the balance of honoring the past with the energy efficient needs of the moment while looking ahead to future sustainability.

A series pass to all three tours is available at a discount:  $50 in advance ($10 savings)

The three green tours include:
1.  Old is the New Green:  The Sanctuary - March 11, 2010 - 11:30 am - 1:00 pm:  Meet on Capitol Hill at 1841 16th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122 - For over 100 years this building served as the home to the First Church of Christ, Scientist.  The structure is now in the process of being revitalized as luxury condominiums that reflect Capitol Hill's urban life style, while keeping the original architectural detail and craftsmanship.  Each unit is entirely unique and brings a refreshing fusion of modern historic sustainability.

Developer and building, Joe Lavin will share his insights on adaptive reuse and green preservation.  Casey Scalf and Cindi Stever with Secrist design will guide us through the one-of-a-kind interior spaces.

2.  Old is the New Green:  Starbucks Center - May 26, 2010 - 11:00 am - 12:30 pm:  Meet in SODO at 2401 Utah Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98134 - This iconic building was built in 1912 by Union Pacific from Yesler Mill timber to house the Sears and Roebuck & Co. store.  At 2.1 million square feet, the LEED-EB certified building is the largest multi-tenant building in Washington State and helped to breathe life back into Seattle's SODO neighborhood.

Kevin Daniels, President of Nitze-Stagen and Daniels Development, will speak to the challenges of being a trail blazer in sustainable preservation and what made this project such a success.  Don't miss the chance to get an insider view at what makes Starbucks' global headquarters a leader in green preservation.

3.  Old is the New Green:  The Cobb and Skinner Buildings - July 21, 2010 - 11:00 am - 12:30 pm:  Meet at 1301 Fourth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101 - Brett Phillips with Unico Properties will guide us through the lobby of the historic 1910 Cobb Building, (listed on the National Registry of Historic Places) which housed medical and dental offices but has undergone an adaptive reuse to luxury housing.  We'll then visit the 1926 Skinner Building (a City of Seattle Landmark and home to the 5th Avenue Theatre) and learn how Unico has helped to make these two historic properties energy efficient and LEED Certified.

Developer and building, Joe Lavin will share his insights on adaptive reuse and green preservation.  Casey Scalf and Cindi Stever with Secrist design will guide us through the one-of-a-kind interior spaces.
