Hard Rubber Orchestra with Marianne Trudel
On Tuesday, October 15 at the Annex, Hard Rubber is very proud to present the world premiere of Montreal composer/pianist Marianne Trudels Nature speaks: 8 haikus with the composer herself as soloist. This musical meeting between Vancouvers 18-piece powerhouse jazz orchestra and one of Montreals finest jazz pianists and composers is an amazing start to Hard Rubbers 29th season!

Hard Rubber Artistic Director John Korsrud explains why he pursued this collaboration with Trudel; Ive had tremendous respect for Mariannes musicianship since I first heard her in 2005 and Im very excited to have her write for and perform with Hard Rubber. Not only is she a rising star in the world of improvising piano, she is a talented and nuanced composer with fantastic attention to detail, very skilled at orchestration and has proved she can handle a large-scale commission through her 50-minute composition for LOrchestre National de Jazz de Montreal. She is a composer with an amazing and original harmonic sense, very unique in the world of jazz and improvised music and is strongly influenced by contemporary classical music.

The program will also feature some smaller works by Trudel, and John Korsrud will present his Songs from the Nunnery, a poem to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, featuring cellist Marina Hasselberg and Trudel on the piano.

Marianne Trudel is a pianist, composer, improviser, and arranger. Her music, drawing from the crossroads of several influences, bears witness to her open eyes on the infinite universe of music. Energetic and passionate, she pursues an active career giving as many solo recitals as in various formations: duet, Trifolia, Marianne Trudel 4 + Ingrid Jensen, septet and big ensembles. She has presented her music in many countries, including Mexico, France, Spain, Germany, England, Scotland, Italy, Hungary, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and China.

Formed in 1990, the Hard Rubber Orchestra, one of Canadas most active and unpredictable ensembles of new music and recipient of the 2005 Alcan Arts Award, has released 4 CDs, including the newly released Suite for Hard Rubber by Kenny Wheeler (Justin Time Records), toured across Canada and to Europe, and produced large scale productions including Cantata for a King, and The Ice Age, a new music ice show.
