Colour Revolt
If you were to have told Junior Kimborough, T-Model Ford and R.L. Burnside their legacy as the superstars of Oxford, Mississippis premier blues label would be superseded by a roster of skinny suburban indie-rockers, any one of them wouldve slandered you in verse. For Colour Revolt, though, the influence of Fat Possums Not The Same Old Blues Crap compilations is as prominent in their sound as their favorite Screaming Trees and Kyuss records.

Naked And Red, the lead track off their label debut, Plunder, Beg And Curse, is one of the most propulsive slices of heavy Southern gothic since Sixteen Horsepowers The Low Estate. And what with its talk of swinging from liquor trees, a misunderstood Devil and the dark side of Eden and all, it might as well have been written somewhere in the middle of the swamp with a beat-up acoustic (it was recorded at Sweet Tea Studios, in the heart of the Delta, with acclaimed indie knobsmith Clay Jones). Still, Kings Of Leon dont have shit on these guys.

Colour Revolt vocalist/guitarist Jesse Coppenbarger and bassist Patrick Addison on Naked And Red

What was the primary inspiration for Naked And Red?
Jesse Coppenbarger: Lyrically, bizarre religious images. And trying to throw myself into the mix. I just wanted something that flowed lyrically as the song did musically.

What is your biggest beef with Christianity?
Coppenbarger: As with anything, hypocrisy. I have no beef with Christ, just Christian culture. It can be very snobbish and exclusive. Not always though! Just growing up in the South, I experienced more of the culture than the faith. I in no way intend to pick on Christianity, just to let the role of it in the lyrics feel a little awkward sometimes. Religion and sexuality are things that are uncomfortable issues, so theres a lot of that in the lyrics.
Patrick Addison: Man, Im gonna have to agree with Jesse on this one. Hypocrisy. Following the crowd cause its the thing to do. Not disrespecting or anything. I went to Catholic school, and have gone to church my whole life. There just needs to be some sort of a line between a social event and a spiritual event. Its just weird down here in the South sometimes. Plus, its male-dominated, give them women a chance!

Would you consider Naked and Red to be blues?
Coppenbarger: Ive heard people say that it was bluesy. I think that in some capacity, yes, we have that in us but almost all American music is derived from it, so its hard to say were not. I think we use a number of blues tricks in therelike nursery rhyme repetition or whateverbut I think we were going for more of a messed-up-soul vibe with the big bass line and drums.
Addison: As a straightforward definition of blues, no, its not. We definitely have picked up some blues influence from living in Oxford and being exposed to so much around us. We get to see LC Ulmer, T-Model Ford and Kinny Kimbrough play on a pretty regular basis around town. You cant help but try to be as bad-ass as those guys.

What on earth is a liquor tree and where can one acquire the seeds?
Coppenbarger: The liquor tree is just a delicious sounding treat I invented in 2029 with my partner/inventor/lover, Cornelius Q. Gagabond. You will be able to purchase them at any local airstrip or non-mainstream airport. - RON HART
