The Cradle Will Rock

September 21, 2016 7:30 PM

Corruption wherever you turn corporate power and greed the little guy getting crushed. The American Dream is at risk, and its up to the people to reclaim it. Sound familiar? The questions being so hotly debated in this election year play out with uncanny parallels in Marc Blitzsteins legendary pro-union musical The Cradle Will Rock. In the summer of 1937, his show had become so controversial that the federal government tried to shut it down just before its Broadway premiere. Terri Kent returns to direct TMTPs annual partnership with the Musical Theatre Program at Kent State University. Dont miss this rare chance to see an American masterwork about courage and cowardicefunny, angry, and in the end, unforgettably stirring.

Curtain Up at the Cotton Club: An Encore Presentation

October 15, 2016 3:00 PM

After last seasons sold-out performances, this multi-media concert is back by popular demand! Welcome to the hottest spot in Harlem. In the 1920s and 30s the Cotton Club was the citadel of the New York jazz scene, its stage filled with the greatest black musical and theatrical talent this country has ever produced: Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and so many more. Stormy Weather was introduced there, and Ive Got the World on a String. Internationally famous, the room attracted royalty. But the club also embodied American racism, with a whites-only admittance policy that sent its performers to the kitchen for supper. Get your tickets early as TMTP and Cleveland Jazz Orchestra join forces to document a stunning chapter in the history of American entertainment.

Open a New Window: The Songs of Jerry Herman

March 26, 2017 3:00 PM

Hes been dubbed a theatrical institution and with good reason, because composer-lyricist Jerry Herman wrote the scores for three of the biggest successes in Broadway history: Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage Aux Folles. This concert charts the career of a man who says hes had a lifelong romance with the show tunesongs that are unashamedly optimistic and irresistibly hummable, first performed by such stars as Angela Lansbury, Carol Channing, Ethel Merman and Barbra Streisand. Lansbury put it best: To have as talented a songwriter as Jerry write a score especially for you is an unbelievable blessing. He writes wonderfully emotional words and music.

Behind the Musical: Annie

April 30, 2017 3:00 PM

Leapin Lizards! Hard to believe its been 40 years since the darling red-headed orphan debuted on Broadway, and that she took so many hard knocks along the way. It was lyricist and director Martin Charnins idea to make a family musical based on the famous comic stripjust about everyone on Broadway thought he was crazy. Only when Mike Nichols stepped in as producer was the show saved, and the trials and tribulations paid off in a Tony Award-winning bonanza. Well include all of the songs from Charnin and Charles Strouses terrific score including the iconic Tomorrow, Maybe, Its a Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street and Youre Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile. Annies storyand our back story of this feel-good musicals creationis filled with hope that the sunll come out tomorrow.
