About the Artists:
WENDY BECKERMAN Wendy is excited to be releasing her fifth CD of original songs at this concert event. In the words of music journalist and songwriter Jim Allen, "Hearing the music of Wendy Beckerman is like tapping into some timeless stream where songwriting and poetry are forever intertwined. Her voice strikes straight at the pressure point of every song, with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of quiet intensity. Similarly, her writing has always married poetic power with a terse literary economy. Her melodies, sometimes rooted in folk modalities, have the heft of tunes that have existed for generations while boasting hooks as fresh and sharp as a new reel of razor wire. Wendy's uniqueness comes from the naturalness of her writing and performance, where she brings heart into every moment of sound and breath. Visit WendyBeckerman.com.
ANNIE GALLUP A lifetime's dedication to her art has made Annie Gallup an icon among people who take songwriting seriously. Unabashedly imaginative and sensual, her elaborate song-length works of fiction crackle with wordplay and pulse with insistent rhythm. Borrowing forms from ancient folk tales to modern poetry, Annie sings over her bluesy guitar figures as if sharing secrets. Not many songwriters take the kinds of risks that Annie does, and barely any can pull them off with such deft, startling mastery. Visit AnnieGallup.com
PETER GALLWAY Called "a master of free verse" in the Boston Globe, Peter Gallway came of age in the explosive music scene in Greenwich Village in the 1960's, was a member of the seminal Fifth Avenue Band, and has released fifteen albums on the Warner/Reprise and various independent labels including the internationally acclaimed albums Freedom Is (2008) and Manhattan Nocturne (2009). He collaborates with iconic songwriter Annie Gallup as the duo Hat Check Girl. Peter has produced over fifty albums and special projects, and his music has been featured in film and theater. His first collection of poetry Big Mercy was published in 2012. Visit PeterGallway.com
KAREN ALMQUIST Acoustic Roots with a Blues Bent. This is a woman with "gutsy guitar playing, and songs straight from the heart," says acoustic guitar innovator Alex De Grassi about Karen Almquist. Other artists describe her as "soulful," "high quality," and "one hell of a guitar player." She's also got the goods when she gets behind the harmonica or in front of a piano. She plays music because it's in her bones, with influences such as Lightning Hopkins, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor. Karen has recorded three projects, including Tracking of Time, produced by Nina Gerber. It's a rare pleasure to catch her in live performance, but when you do, her silky voice and bluesy feel are reverberating from a living room, the rooftop of a friend's New York apartment, or a listening room somewhere in Europe. Recording artist Kristina Olsen says, "Give her a listen," and you can do so at CDBaby.com
