SIMENON REDUX: MAIGRET ON FILM, Co-presented with Penguin Books
September 5-7 ALL ON 35MM!

Last summer Anthology presented a resoundingly successful series highlighting a selection of the numerous film adaptations of works by prolific Belgian author Georges Simenon, arguably the most famous, renowned, and best-selling of all 20th-century writers, whose nearly 400 novels and short stories have given rise to upwards of 100 different movies. That series included only two films featuring Simenon's most famous creation, the indefatigable, unflappable Detective Maigret. Now, with Penguin Books having recently launched an astonishingly ambitious project to re-publish all 75 of the Maigret novels, not to mention the coming 25th anniversary of Simenon's death (on September 4), the time is clearly ripe for a Maigret-themed follow-up!

In collaboration with Penguin, we will be hosting a weekend of further Simenon screenings, including one of the revelations of the earlier series  Julien Duvivier's stunningly beautiful LA TÊTE D'UN HOMME  as well as two films we were pained to have to omit last summer: Jean Renoir's NIGHT AT THE CROSSROADS and Maurice Tourneur's CECILE IS DEAD!, two early Simenon adaptations by legendary auteurs. Featuring three remarkably different Maigrets, as embodied by Pierre Renoir, Harry Baur, and Albert Préjean, this series demonstrates the astonishing adaptability of Simenon's signature character.

The Friday, September 5th screening of NIGHT AT THE CROSSROADS will be preceded by a conversation between Simenon's son John Simenon and renowned translator and biographer David Bellos (translator of Simenon's 'Pietr the Latvian', as well as numerous works by Georges Perec and others)!
