French-born PhilippeManoury was a pioneering visionary of electro-acoustic music in the late '80s and early '90s. Manoury was a member of the composition faculty at UC-San Diego 2010-2013, where he has continued his research and composition. Manourywas awarded "Best Composer of the Year" in France's Victoires de la Musique Classique 2012 (the French equivalent of the Grammys), for his opera The Night of Gutenberg. Given this recent high-profile success, this portrait concert is a timely opportunity to introduce this seminal European composer to an American audience.

Ensemble Moto Perpetuo (EMP) is a flexible chamber orchestra committed to boundary-breaking endeavors focusing on innovative music, unique artistic vision, and a lens on the community at large -- with a belief that collaboration is inherent to innovation. EMP has been described as "consistently invigorating" by the New York Times and has collaborated with various ensembles and companies that include the French contemporary-classical outfit Ensemble Linea, New York's Sospeso Ensemble, New Chamber Ballet, as well as cutting-edge composers such as Jason Eckhardt, Raphael Cendo, Mark Andre  among others.
