Dare To Be Square, Burleson!
WESTERN SWING SHOW & SQUARE DANCE!

ARE YOU READY?

WHY WESTERN SWING?   Because it is music made for dancing and in 2011 the Texas Legislature designated western swing music as the official music of the state of Texas!

Western swing is a subgenre of American country music style that began in the 1920s in the American Southwest among the region's popular western string bands.  It is dance music, often with an up-tempo beat, which attracted huge crowds to dance halls and clubs in Texas, Oklahoma, and California during the 1930s and 40s.

Prominent groups during the peak of western swing's popularity included The Light Crust Doughboys, Milton Brown and His Musical Brownies, Spade Cooley and His Orchestra, and Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.

WHY SQUARE DANCE?  Because it is the official dance of Texas!  In our nation's history, a community dance historically symbolizes the coming together and sharing of a community.  If you go to a dance, you just dance with people you know, but if you go to a square dance, you dance with everyone else who's dancing.  Anyone who attended a public elementary school in Texas in the 50's or 60's has probably had a square dance lesson.

The square dance is uniquely American, having evolved in early America from European forms of communal dances.  All that's needed is music - ddles, guitars, bass - a dance area and a caller who will help keep the party going.  Traditional square dance is almost always danced to LIVE fiddle driven music.
