Creative Strategies for Change (CSC) is thrilled to present the premiere of Race Matters? an interactive story for change, with an original score by Black Lash. This dynamic production engages the audience through hip hop, theater, and dialogue. The weekend will include 3 performances, two receptions, and a silent auction. Written by and featuring K. Salim Ajanku, and also featuring Stevanie Williams, Kokayi Donladi, and Rachael Sharp, with an original score by Black Lash. Race Matters? Is a story about life in urban USA. Malik is 35, working class, a husband and father. He is a music teacher in an inner city high school, trying to get ahead, while making a difference. Malik encounters challenges at every turn. Through his relationships and experiences, and the layering of multimedia, the depth of double consciousness is surfaced, and the dissonance dissolved. The strength of Malik's spirit, his self knowledge, and his commitment to his community ignite him to persevere and rise above. This is more than a performance; it is an opportunity to ask questions, think critically, and engage; it is part of a movement to deepen understanding across differences, and inspire innovative approaches to grappling with challenging social issues. **This presentation of the production includes mature language.
Creative Strategies for Change is a grassroots, Denver based non profit organization with a mission to mobilize arts and education for social justice. CSC works with schools, communities, universities, organizations, and corporations, offering a variety of programs and services including consulting, community events and workshops, leadership and professional development, and after school and enrichment programs for youth.
All proceeds raised during this fundraising premiere will support CSC's innovative arts and social justice programs for young people. There will be a stellar silent auction on Friday night, as well as an opening reception with live music from Black Lash. There will be opportunities to make donations at each show, with great door prizes, and Sunday's matinee will be followed by a reception with the artists.
