Twenty-third (23rd) Annual Tie-One-On Luncheon
Fairmont Olympic Hotel
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

The Breakfast Group will hold its Twenty-third (23rd) Annual "Tie-One-On" Luncheon on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel's Spanish Ball Room.  The event is co-sponsored by Turner Construction Company and the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. This luncheon continues to serve as a "Rite of Passage" for approximately 75 young men who have successfully completed the Project MISTER Program or were selected by school staff for participation.

Project MISTER is a dynamic program that addresses the needs of teenage fathers and high-risk young men of high school age.  The program works with the Seattle Public Schools to increase the number of teen males returning to and/or remaining in school.  It also has a marked effect on reducing the incidents of abuse among high-risk teen parents, enhancing self-esteem, life skills, and assisting in the prevention of teen pregnancy.  The core programs are based at South Lake and Franklin High Schools.  In recent years, young men from similar programs at Seattle Urban Academy and several other Seattle High Schools have been included in the program.

This year our Keynote Speaker will be Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Jose L. Banda.  Our special guests in attendance will be: Jay Inslee (Washington State Governor), Ed Murray (Seattle City Mayor), and Doug Baldwin (Wide Receiver - Seattle Seahawks).

The purpose of the luncheon is to honor the students by pairing each one with a member of the business or professional community, who will act as the student's host for lunch. During the luncheon students and mentors will exchange business cards and encourage future contact and assistance with employment opportunities or future education plans. Each student will receive a necktie and a dress shirt, a symbol of passage into adulthood.  The "Rite of Passage" comes when the mentors teach the students how to tie the necktie.  This is an important event that provides for respected members of the community to mentor and bond with some of these young men.

This gala event, which has been hosted by The Fairmont Olympic Hotel since its inception twenty-two years ago, is designed to support a segment of our community that desperately needs our attention and support.

Event Includes:

* Rites of Passage ceremony matching students with mentors
* Cultural experience for the youth
* Prominent guest speakers with a strong educational message
* Recognition for academic success
* Necktie and hard-soled shoes provided for students to encourage job seeking
* Contacts made for potential employment
