CIRCLE OF FRIENDS | Foundry Hall
Circle Of Friends features local favorites Robert Warner ("The Dutchmyn"), Pamela Chappell, Joe Foster, Andru Bemis in concert with Jan Christensen and Bob Conroy from the New York sea music community. The concert will be in the form of a round robin with the performers swapping songs and sharing the original and traditional music of our two regions.
Jan Christensen and Bob Conroy perform as part of The New York Packet, the official maritime music group of South Street Seaport Museum in New York. In addition to their work with The Packet, both artists perform individually and as members of other well-known New York area groups.
Some call Bob Conroy the "Doctor of Banjo" for his virtuosity on the 5-string. Bob is a member of Stout, for years the "house band" of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, performing at events throughout the five boroughs of the city. He's appeared with Stout and as an individual performer at Mystic Seaport and other maritime festivals. He tours regularly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, both as a solo performer and in company with well-known musicians on that side of the Atlantic at concerts and festivals. Bob is featured on the Stout CDs, on two collaborations with friend and fellow Staten Islander Norm Pedersen, and as instrumental backup and vocalist on a number of other albums. He's written a number of well-liked songs, and has given introductory classes and workshops on American traditional music in the New York City school system.
For more than three decades, Jan Christensen has been a member of The Hudson River Sloop Singers, the group brought together by Pete Seeger from musicians up and down the Hudson Valley to sing in support of the environmental work of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. Christensen has crewed and sung aboard Clearwater and other vessels of the environmental fleet, and has used traditional chanteys in working the vessels. He's performed regularly at Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival, the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival, the sea music festival at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and other events and concerts. One of his songs, "The Ghosts of Ellis Island," is in the archives of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and is used by teachers as an educational tool on immigration. Christensen was a commentator and chanteyman aboard spectator vessels during the Operation Sail parades of ships in New York Harbor in 1986, 1992, and 2000. He's a featured performer on The Hudson River Sloop Singers' CD, Broad Old River II, and is currently working on a CD of original songs.
