Mòd Naiseanta Aimearagaidh - the annual U.S. National Mòd sponsored by An Comunn Gàidhealach Ameireaganach.
What is a Mòd? Originally the word referred to a court held by a Highland chief for settling disputes over rent and other matters. Today it refers to a competition in Scottish Gaelic song, poetry and prose. The first modern mòd was held in 1892 in Oban, Scotland. The concept has since spread to Canada and the United States, and mòds today are held in Canada, Ohio and North Carolina, in addition to the U.S. National Mòd.
The first Mòd sponsored by ACGA, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Scottish Gaelic, was held in 1988 in Northern Virginia. Over the years, more than 100 people have participated in our competitions, with competitors traveling from as far as Manitoba and Massachusetts, Colorado and North Carolina, and even from Scotland to attend. Many have returned year after year to enjoy the competitions and other Mòd events.
Mòd activities at Ligonier coincide with the Highland Games and run for three days from the poetry, sight reading and storytelling competitions on Friday evening to the song competitions, award ceremonies and banquet on Saturday and workshops on Gaelic song, language and culture Sunday. We hope you also will have the chance to enjoy the Ligonier Highland Games, which have hosted the ACGA Mòd since 1995
