Album Release feat. Phil Wiggins
For one night only, live at the Hillman City Collaboratory, Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons are joined by harmonica great Phil Wiggins to celebrate the release of their new album, "A Black & Tan Ball." Doors at 8:00pm, music at 8:30!
The music that renowned Seattle roots duo Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons are making on their new album, A Black & Tan Ball, is not just blues music. Theyve recruited friend and touring partner Phil Wiggins, a legend of American blues harmonica, and they dip deep into the country blues repertoire. Just last year they won the International Blues Challenge, cementing them as one of the best duos in the blues world. But they move as easily into old stringband tunes, or early jazz songs, as they do anything by the blues greats, and even when playing blues, they pull from a strangely anomalous old field recording source. The best word for this kind of blended repertoire that folklorists have come up with so far is the term songster, used to explain the worldliness of early blues singers who tapped music-hall hits and minstrel songs as much as they recreated old field hollers. But the real term that should be used is a new one and an important one: Black Americana. By pulling together the many threads of black American roots music, and demonstrating the underlying meanings behind the black experience in folk music, Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons are showing another side to Americana that can help expand the genres boundaries.
Hear this music live in South Seattle at 8:00pm on Friday, July 28th, where Ben, Joe and Phil will play for all ages. The cover will be $15 at the door, bring your whole family!
