What is Contemplative Dance?
Contemplative Dance is a simple yet profound practice of moving meditation, also known as Authentic Movement. It works with the innate intelligence of the body, psyche and imagination, and their drive for wholeness and integration. This type of embodied exploration was developed by dancer Mary Whitehouse who drew on Carl Jungs theories of Active Imagination.
Contemplative Dance is a further development of Mary's practice and has taught for over 30 years by Alton Wasson and Daphne Lowell at numerous workshops throughout the US and abroad. They collaborate to offer many trainings held in Central Massachusetts in summer programs at Hampshire College and in Year Long training programs as well. Many current practitioners and teachers of this practice from Maine have been taught and strongly influenced by these teachings.
