San Francisco's Birds of Fire is living proof that rockn'roll isn't dead. In a digital world that scoffs at it's analog forefathers, the Birds have the ammo it takes to silence the DJ. It's impossible to compete with front man Chris Blea's ethereal guitar solos, pain laced vocals and unfeigned lyrics. Imagine Chris Cornell singing a Negro Spiritual on his very best day ever...and you get halfway to how good Blea sounds. Blea released an album with the Beat Thieves in 2014, and his newest project with Birds of Fire is a very exciting departure from this previous work. The Birds dish out hard, unapologetic rock. From fast paced, adrenaline pumping, rapid fire John Bonham-esque drum fills to slow and heavy bass licks that go down sweet and savory like molasses. Blea proves he's not a one trick pony when transitioning from the soul laden, bass driven anthem On My Way to a white knuckle falsetto on Coming of the Flood. The name Birds of Fire is taken from an album by Mahavishnu Orchestra, a 70's jazz-rock fusion band. Which stands to reason as Blea has said himself, Though I'm a rocker in energy, intellectually, I'm more akin to jazz.... Blea is a musical anthropologist of sorts-and it shows. When he strokes his Gibson Firebird, it's like an extension of his body, and he becomes fluid with the sound. When he plugs in his electric violin he grows yet another limb, and the music erupts organically. Perhaps Blea is such an adept musician due to the fact that he doesn't see an end in sight. When asked what his ultimate goal in the music industry is, he replied, Yes, I want to be a rock star, but on a deeper level I could give a shit as long as the journey is cool. To never be satisfied, that is the Ultimate Goal, for satisfaction breeds stillness, which limits progression. Birds of Fire are working on releasing their first EP.
