Rick Onderko, retired from the US Army in October 2016 after 28 years of service and currently works for General Dynamics Information Technology, at Schofield Barracks, in the field of Modeling and Simulations. While in the US Army, Rick served as an Aviation Officer, holding numerous positions from platoon to the division staff level. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and recently obtained his Professional Scrum Master 1 (PSM1) certification. His civilian education includes, a B.S. in Clinical Pathology from Eastern Michigan University, a M.A. in Diplomacy and Military Studies from Hawaii Pacific University, and is currently pursuing a MBA in Organizational Leadership from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Dane graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Law and commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  He later obtained a Masters Degree in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology and a Certificate in Military Construction Management. Dane has held numerous leadership and staff positions in the Army as an engineer officer assigned to Ft. Bragg, NC and most recently at Schofield Barracks, HI. Throughout the course of a highly successful and decorated nine years on active duty, he attributes his success to the application of project management principles in his duties especially in combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dane obtained his PMP certification in 2014 while still on active duty and has remained an active member of PMI Honolulu since. He applied the same project management principles or process groups, lessons learned from other military Service members, and support from family, friends, and PMI to his transition process. Dane was afforded the opportunity to continue to serve as a DoD civilian supporting the U.S. Army Medical Command as a general engineer. He currently serves as the facilities manager of the Schofield Barracks Health Clinic overseeing the daily operations and maintenance, project management of repairs, new construction, and other duties.  Dane continues to serve as an Army reservist at Ft. Shafter Flats.

Dane is passionate about helping other military Service members transition from the military to civilian life emphasizing the benefits of becoming a member of PMI Honolulu, obtaining PMP certification, and dedicated to life-long learning.

John Kim served as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy for 9 years. Johns first assignment in the Navy was with a small aviation unit which mostly focused on the execution of a given order. Johns job as a junior officer encompassed translation of vaguely worded orders into a clear set of action items to be assigned to an individual resource.

Johns subsequent assignments were with higher level echelons that focused on the big picture  the orchestration of multiple units with various capabilities. During these assignments, John implicitly learned the art of military campaign that dealt with the complexity of managing multiple workstreams - the sequencing of multiple units movement, mitigating the risk coming from dependency and making trade-off decisions when things go wrong.

As John was preparing his transition to civilian life, he realized his aforementioned experiences in the military drew close parallels to project management disciplines. However, he found it was challenging to convince prospective employers how his military experiences were transferable to the field of project management. After many embarrassing interviews and rejections, John is currently working at KPMG as an IT management consultant. He enjoys his new career very much.
