The Sorel Organization in partnership with Harvestworks Digital Media Center presents Sounds of the Ascension: an evening of sacred music, sonic healing, and musical alchemy, in the stunning architecture of the Church of Ascension in Greenwich Village, NYC (5th Avenue + 10th Street)

8pm: Korean-American vocalist/sound artist BORA YOON + Iranian-Armenian thereminist ARMEN RA present a very special performance of arias + electronics, soundscaoes + songs.  Featuring works by Mozart (Requiem, Lacrimosa), Bach (Variation of Ebrame Dich, St Matthew Passion), Komitas (Armenian sacred pieces), Schubert (Ave Maria), Puccini, and Bellini by Armen Ra and original soundscapes and music by Bora Yoon.

7pm: audio speaker genius STEPHAN MOORE has designed 3-point spatial sound installation in the church balcony, 'Calling Up' which will open the evening of 5/5, and run thru July 15th.

Described by the New York Times as mesmerizing and by KoreAm Journal as totally unique, Bora Yoon is an interdisciplinary vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound artist  who works at the intersection of music, performance, and architecture  to create spatial sound environments and experiences with instruments from various cultures and centuries. She has performed at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Singapore Arts Festival, Nam Jun Paik Museum (Korea), MADE Festival (Sweden), Festival of World Cultures (Poland), the Park Avenue Armory, and Walker Art Center, and diverse range of collaborators include interactive live visuals and producer R. Luke DuBois, composer Michael Gordon, the late poet Sekou Sundiata, and choreographer Noemie Lafrance. She is a TED Fellow, a Princeton University music composition fellow, and an advisor and recipient of the Music/Sound fellowship by the New York Foundation for the Arts.

The mesmerizing style of Persian-Armenian theremin virtuoso, Armen Ra, has garnered the admiration of fans on multiple continents. He is considered one of the finest thereminists in the world today. Intrigued by this strange and one-of-a-kind instrument, Armen Ra began to study the theremin in 2001. His debut performance came later that year when he shared the stage with the orchestral group, Antony & The Johnsons, in New York City. Soon afterward, Armens well attended solo concert at The Gershwin Hotel was covered by CNN.  Armen has performed at upscale venues in the United States and Europe including: Musee Rodin, Paris,  The United Nations, Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Chateau Marmont, The Broad Musem, CBGBs, The New Museum (NYC), Wiener Konzerthaus Mozartsaal (Vienna), Villa Petraia (Florence, Italy).   The REDCAT (Los Angeles), hosted Armens performance of his critically-acclaimed multimedia piece, METAL (A Tribute to Maria Callas). His debut solo CD, Plays The Theremin was released on Bowl & Fork Records in the summer of 2010. It showcases many classical Armenian laments and folk songs. // STEPHAN MOORE
Stephan Moore is an audio artist, sound designer, composer, improviser, teacher, and curator based in Chicago. His creative work manifests as electronic studio compositions, improvisational outbursts, sound installations, scores for collaborative performances, algorithmic compositions, and sound designs for unusual circumstances. Evidence, his long-standing project with Scott Smallwood, has performed widely and released several recordings over the past 15 years. He is the president of Isobel Audio, LLC, and is a member of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology, The Nerve Tank, a canary torsi, Composers Inside Electronics, and the Wingspace Theatrical Collective. He toured for several years as the music coordinator and sound engineer of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and has worked with Pauline Oliveros, Anthony McCall, and Animal Collective, among others. He is a lecturer of sound art and sound design in the Department of Radio, Television and Film at Northwestern University.
