Being Mortal
The MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization and MaineHealth, in partnership with MaineHealth Care at Home, Maine Medical Partners, Maine Medical Center Department of Medicine, Southern Maine Agency on Aging and the Muskie School at the University of Southern Maine, are hosting a free screening and discussion of the documentary Being Mortal on Wednesday, April 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the USM Abromson Center in Portland. The film is being shown in conjunction with National Healthcare Decision Day (NHDD), an annual observance that aims to help people across the U.S. understand the value of advance healthcare planning.

Being Mortal explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their  relationships with the doctors, nurses and family members who care for them. It follows  medical journalist and surgeon Dr. Atul Gawande as he shares stories from the people and families he encounters. When Dr. Gawande's own father gets cancer, his search for answers about how to best care for the dying becomes a personal quest. Being Mortal underscores the importance of people planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions.

Seventy percent of Americans say they would prefer to die at home, but nearly 70 percent die in hospitals and institutions. Ninety percent of Americans know they should have conversations about end-of-life care, yet only 30 percent have done so.

Following the film screening, audience members are invited to participate in a panel discussion about the issues raised in the film. Advance care planning resources will be available. All are welcome to attend this free event.

The free screening is made possible through support from the MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization, MaineHealth, MaineHealth Care at Home, Maine Medical Center Department of Medicine, Maine Medical Partners and a grant from the John and Wauna Harman Foundation in partnership with the Hospice Foundation of America.
