Screening "Why Not Home?"
A beautiful film by Jessica Moore, a family nurse practitioner and film maker, that sheds light on the current state of American maternity care and the evidence for out-of-hospital birth, illustrated by the stories of doctors and nurses who deliver care in medical settings every day, but make alternative choices when it comes to having their own children, as well as commentaries of experts in the field.
The need to tell this story grew out of a Jessica's own experience, and she soon found overwhelming support from like-minded nurses and physicians who wanted to talk about the reasons why they chose to give birth outside of the hospital they work in. As Jessica puts it, "this is a story that has the potential to expand understanding of home birth beyond the fringe practice portrayed in the media." Home birth is happening in growing numbers in America, and although it is not for everyone, it is very important to understand why women choose it and why we urgently need to re-think the way we "do birth" in this country. We invite all who are invested in maternity care to come and broaden your understanding of the indispensable elements that make childbirth safe, empowering, and respects a women's choice and autonomy.
