"Alone In Berlin" tells the true story from 1940 Berlin where Anna and Otto Quangel (Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson) have just learned that their only son has been killed on the front line during World War II. The working class couple realizes that Hitler's promises are nothing but lies and deceit. In protest, as a form of resistance, the pair start to write anonymous postcards with anti-Hitler messages. Acting alone, they start to distribute said letters across the city, drawing the attention of the SS and the Gestapo, who, soon afterwards, start to investigate through Daniel Bruhls relentless police detective.
Based on the German author Hans Fallada's 1947 novel, "Every Man Dies Alone" about the real couple, Otto and Elise Hampel. Fallada's book was one of the first anti-Nazi novels to be published by a German after World War II.
