Morton Feldman's Triadic Memories
"Triadic Memories" (1981) is a work for solo piano consisting of a single, unbroken movement lasting nearly two hours. It is a remarkably delicate piece, in spite of its vast scale. From the start it is characterized by hushed dynamics, shifting colors, and slow movement through perilously high registers. Feldman once aptly described it as the "largest butterfly in captivity."
Luke Berryman studied music as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford. He won an instrumental scholarship and an academic exhibition, and graduated with first-class honors in 2007. He went onto a masters course in music at Boston University. In 2009, during his final semester in America, BU presented him with an honor award for outstanding achievement. He then returned home to England to begin a doctoral degree under the supervision of John Deathridge at Kings College, London. His PhD thesis was on the use of Richard Wagner's operas in Nazi Germany.
Luke also studied piano in London with Niel Immelman, a professor of keyboard at the Royal College of Music. His solo repertoire embraces composers from Scarlatti to Stockhausen, and he has given premieres by a number of living composers. His concerto repertoire includes works by Mozart, Gershwin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saƫns, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky.
Today he lives and works in New York.
Please note this concert will have no interval.
