Orvieto Trio in concert
The Orvieto Piano Trio - Lauren Basney, violin, Daniel Frankhuisen, cello, and Dr. Byron Chow, MD, piano - warmly invites you to attend an evening of chamber music in the intimate setting of a private home. This is a unique opportunity for the concert-goer not only to enjoy great music but also to appreciate up close the dynamics between violinist, cellist, and pianist during a performance. Members of the trio will introduce the pieces and offer some insights into the music, and after the concert you will be able to engage the musicians directly and ask any questions you have about the performance.

The program includes the gorgeous one-movement Schubert Notturno, Op. 148 (D. 897); Joaquin Turina's Trio no. 1 in D major, Op. 35, its Spanish accents reflecting the composer's heritage; and the brooding Trio no. 2 in e minor by Dmitri Shostakovich, a 20th century masterpiece of the trio literature.

Address of the private residence in Scripps Ranch will be sent to purchaser upon purchase of the ticket.  Seating is limited.  The host thanks you in advance for respecting his shoeless, smoke-free policy while inside his residence.

Bios:

The members of the Orvieto Piano Trio met in 2009 during the Orvieto Musica chamber music festival in the Italian town of the same name. As happens regularly at such festivals, they found tremendous enjoyment in playing together and sharing musical ideas, but they also made the remarkable realization that three individuals from different corners of the country and at different stages in their careers could find the singular passion of playing to have revitalized each others love of performing to an even higher degree. It is the Trios desire to share this passion with a wider audience and to ignite interest in the live performing arts that spurred them on to perform together upon returning to the United States. The Trio hopes to return to Orvieto in the coming years to nurture the inspiration that brought them together.

Violinist Lauren Basney has performed throughout Europe and North America, as well as in Japan, Israel, and Australia, including six performances in Carnegie Hall in the past decade.  Winner of the Zerounian and Madura String Competitions, she was selected as a Yamaha Young Performing Artist and was twice the winner of Artist Internationals Special Presentation Award.  She holds degrees from Juilliard, Yale, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her recordings have been released on the Albany and Navona labels.  Lauren has performed with members of the Tokyo, Juilliard, Shanghai, and Daedalus String Quartets, and as a member of the Latett Duo, New York Piano Trio, Shuffle Ensemble, and the Live Music Project.  Between 2004-2012, she performed with the Alianza Quartet, 2007 grand-prize winners at the Plowman Competition, and 2008 first-prize winners of the Chamber Music Foundation of New England Competition.  Following their 2007 Carnegie Hall debut, The New York Times reported that the Alianza players are musical, well-trained and have an unusually elegant sound.

Cellist Daniel Frankhuizen has performed throughout the United States and abroad as a soloist, chamber musician, and in several pop groups. As an improvising musician, he is dedicated to performing original music in a variety of venues and genres from rock bands to jazz groups and experimental new music ensembles.  He worked on the 2008 John Browns Body album Amplify, which debuted at #1 on Billboards Reggae Chart; he also recorded on pop group Holychilds 2013 hit singles Best Friends and Watching Waiting both as cellist and organist. He completed his undergraduate studies at Ithaca College where he was a member of the symphony, chamber and Contemporary Ensemble, including performances at Alice Tully Hall. Daniel has been informing his passion for chamber music with the Orvieto Trio and in masterclasses with the likes of the Guarneri and Providence String Quartets. Daniel completed his Masters in Music Performance with Julia Lichten at the Purchase College Music Conservatory.

Dr. Byron Chow, MD, is a pediatrician at Neighborhood Healthcare, a non-profit community health center in Escondido, California, and is also an avid pianist, violist, and composer.  He graduated with a combined B.Sc. and M.Sc. in molecular biology from Yale, and received his MD from NYU.  Medical trips to Newfoundland (Canada), Mali, and Honduras affirmed his commitment to working with underserved communities. He provides medical directorship at the local level for two statewide First 5 programs, which include an early childhood home visiting program for at-risk populations and early intervention services focusing on preschoolers developmental and behavioral needs. Since completion of his medical studies, he has been more active musically: with the USD music ensemble, he premiered two original compositions, his Ballade for Piano and Orchestra and Suite for Orchestra; and he is currently a violist in the La Jolla Symphony.  Byron plans to devote more time in the coming years to traveling abroad and to studying music and composition.
