Jimmy Ryan & Christian McNeill w/ Tim Gearan on guitar
A native of Derry City, Ireland, Christian McNeill is a force of alternative rock and soul, renowned for gritty and passionate live shows and songs with memorable lyrics anchored in infectious melodies. If you trace his career arc back to his early days with post-punk band, Schtum, to his most recent project, Sea Monsters, you will hear a style of singing and songwriting that is ever-evolving and always engaging. The uncompromising honesty of the song Zero caught the ear of Steven Van Zandt, who in turn placed two songs from the 2013 album Everythings Up For Grabs, in heavy rotation on his globally broadcast, Underground Garage. His new release "Trapped On The Planet - Part One" released Spring 2016.
For those who like their pigeonholes neat and tidy, Jimmy Ryan is an unsettling proposition. He plays mandolin with the old-timey pluck of a bluegrass breakdown, but he also plays it with the ferocity of rock guitarist. What else would you expect of a left-handed rebel who began his career by playing both in a bluegrass combo (Pine Island) and a punk band (Decentz)? That melding of styles made Ryan an pioneer of the so-called alt-country scene in the late 80s when he founded and fronted the bluegrass-tinged rock band The Blood Oranges. And the same eclectic approach makes him one of the most dynamic singer-songwriters on the rich Boston Americana scene today.
Tim Gearan steps out of the frontman spotlight and into lead guitar for this show. Dave Westner on bass and Mike Piehl on drums round out the rhythm section.
