California State University Channel Island presents the World Premiere of "The Thief, the Madman, Quixote & the Magic Doors," a new play by faculty member Bob Mayberry. In 1613, Shakespeare collaborated on an adaptation of one of the many stories found in Cervantes' novel "Don Quixote." The script has never been found. But what might have happened if Shakespeare had met Cervantes? What words would have been exchanged between two of the world's most influential writers? And what if the old knight himself, Don Quixote, had shown up at the meeting? And what if Cervantes' characters showed up? A mad young man, the best friend who betrayed him with his girlfriend, the girlfriend and her friend, a lascivious scribe and a drunken porter? What do you have? A dance of mad men, a party of possibilities, a farce of ferocious friends, and a wild windup of weddings! This madcap satire of theatre, language and storymaking upstages even Shakespeare's wildest comedic endings while promising more sword fights than any of Cervantes' largely forgotten plays. Buckle up for a wild ride when Elizabethan theatre meets the Golden Age of Spanish storytelling.
Original music compsed for the play and performed on stage by Nic Deuson.
