Ojai Film Society and Ojai Art Center present: Salero
THIS IS THE SECOND OF THEMATICALLY LINKED SCREENINGS ON BACK TO BACK DAYS AT THE OJAI ART CENTER THEATER, PRESENTED BY OJAI FILM SOCIETY IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OJAI ART CENTER.
Progress? At what cost? Moises, a salt farmer on the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Colchani, Bolivia, asks this question. Because on the horizon he sees progress coming, in the form of multinational companies lusting after the cache of lithium buried deep beneath the salt flats, the very salt flats he and his ancestors have farmed for generations. This mining effort will destroy his livelihood. But it will also create jobs, stabilizing Bolivias economy for a long time to come as lithium remains the key element in the production of batteries that run everything from pacemakers to cell phones to childrens toys. The impact on the salt miners, who work simply and tirelessly with shovels and picks, will prove to be irrevocable. Sublimely shot and poetically told.
. . . an immersive personal encounter with destiny rewritten. Natalie Roterman, Latin Times
