Calming Kali at Mississippi Pizza
Calming Kali features original compositions by Paul Evans, fusing jazz with rock and more popular music elements. Melodies on piano, groove based drum beats, and horns to highlight this memorable music.


Paul Evans - piano

Paul is an experienced multi-instrumentalist specializing in improvised music. His main backgrounds are from American Jazz, Classical, an eclectic mix of international styles as well as "just everyday sound." A writer as well, Paul breaths poetry into whatever instrument he touches. Paul has studied at CalState Long Beach and Arizona State University where he majored in classical oboe and saxophone performance, as well as studying flute, percussion and music composition. In Arizona he worked as a staff composer and accompanist for ASU's dance department and professional theaters companies. He delights in collaboration and some of those associations are Vagabond Opera & Hungry Opera Machine, AnnaPaul and the Bearded Lady, Wanderlust Circus Orchestra, Klezmocracy, Three for Silver, Baksana, The Cedar Project, and many more.


Martin Zarzar - drum-set

Multi-instrumentalist and award winning songwriter based in Portland, Oregon. His music is as diverse as his multi-cultural upbringing, including elements of Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Flamenco, Classical music, South African music, South American music, Moroccan music, and West African music, to name just a few

Born in Lima, Peru, to a diverse family and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

In addition to ten years with Pink Martini, he has also worked with Simon Shahin, Jamey Haddad, Pepe Raphael, Oscar Stagnaro, Essiet Essiet, Al-Andalus Ensemble, John Butler, Eugene Skeef, Women Of The World, Jorge Pardo, Leo Blanco, Benny Green, Sean Ghazi, Edna Vázquez, Tommy Thayer, Rufus Wainwright, Patrick Lamb, Mario Frangoulis, Dariush, Dan Gaynor, Fared Shafinuri, Mario Diaz, Bobak Salehi, and Dave Eggar, to name just a few.


David Evans - Tenor Sax

Portland, Oregon saxophonist David Evans began playing professionally in his native Alabama in the late 1970s, before he was old enough to drive to his gigs. A scholarship to Loyola University brought him to New Orleans in 1984, where he quickly became a busy commercial and jazz musician. At home in the Northwest since 1994, he keeps a busy schedule as a working musician. As a teacher, David is associated with Lewis and Clark College and Marylhurst University.

David Evans has performed with, recorded with and/or arranged music for many local artists and international legends throughout his career. B. B. King, Mose Allison, Art Abrams, Andrew Oliver, Bobby Torres, Martin Zarzar, the Portland Chamber Orchestra,  The Midnight Serenaders, Ocular Concern and too many more to list!


Charlie Porter - Trumpet

As a multi-genre trumpeter and composer, Charlie Porter takes an all-encompassing approach to music. He has been steadily forging a strong reputation in music, both abroad and on locally in the U.S. In association with organizations such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, U.S. Department of State and bands such as The Absolute Ensemble, Dallas Brass and his own quartet, Charlie has toured extensively throughout United States, Europe, Africa, Asia and down to Australia and New Zealand both a bandleader and sideman.

As a New York-based freelance trumpeter, Charlie performed with many professional orchestras, such as The New Jersey Symphony and The American Symphony Orchestra as well as on numerous New York broadway shows, such as The Apple Tree and South Pacific.

Among the many awards to his credit, he was the first ever to be awarded 1st Prize in the National Trumpet Competition in both Jazz and Classical divisions and was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in Los Angeles.

Charlie currently resides in Portland, OR where he performs and teaches regularly.
