Wahid kicks off the second season of the First Sunday Cultural Event Series.
Wahid is an intimate musical dialogue between Chris Wabich on frame drums and Dimitris Mahlis on oud, a both ancient and modern stringed instrument (similar to the lute) commonly found in Greece, Turkey, and the Middle-East. The performers daring, genre-defying approach composition and improvisation transfixes audiences while transporting them to another time and place.
Both in his compositions and playing, Greek-born Mahlis skillfully draws from Greek, Persian, Carnatic, and Western jazz traditions; in his hands, the oud deftly transforms into a multi-dimensional stringed instrument echoing these traditions.
Three time Grammy nominee, Chris Wabich, created the world's first bass frame drum set specifically for Wahid. His unique setup conveys an extraordinary undercurrent of rhythm and bass harmonic function allowing the duo to create new sonic potential.
Together as Wahid, the performers create a sensitive language conveying the full-spectrum of human emotion and experience.
In addition to their performance, the musicians will discuss their instruments, performance techniques, their influences, and their unique approach to musical composition and improvisation.
Please join us for a wonderful afternoon of evocative and intimate world music. Everyone with an interest is encouraged to attend. Please call for information about student discounts and needs-based pay what you can tickets.
